A New Home
Last November my husband and I began the most exciting and terrifying journey…WE BOUGHT A HOUSE! Ever since it has been a never-ending whirlwind of projects and ideas. We’re so excited to have a place all our own after years of tiny apartment living!
The title of this blog is inspired by the first owner and builder of our century home. Designed by local architect Jonathan Goldsmith, the home was built in 1837 by Elisha Parmelee as a gift to his new wife Mary Rockefeller. Goldsmith was a well-known presence in century home building, specializing in Greek Revival. Many of his homes are still standing and protected by the National Register of Historic Places. We feel so blessed to be able to live in and care for a piece of local history!
The home is spacious with tall ceilings and molding to die for. There is so much to be discovered, from the rough-hewn logs that make our foundation to the Queen Anne style skeleton key locks on the doors. This house feels like it’s constantly giving you a hug.
We immediately began daydreaming of what we want to make of this little third-of-an-acre homestead. Plenty of space for two newlyweds to get their hands dirty!
Goals for The Parmelee Homestead:
Build two raised garden beds
Transplant our seedlings into said garden beds
Build a DIY rain collection system
Clean up and re-mulch flower beds
Build a fire pit from leftover bricks
Re-scape the backyard for a more efficient use of space
Insulate the FREEZING COLD attic before next winter
